Ballet Brika West African Dance Theater is the resident performance ensemble of The Renaissance Village Project, a U.S. based co-operative of African -centered artists who provide training and educational offerings as an alternative form of social and economic development, with the human placed at the center. Its mission is to assist youth and families in developing cultural awareness, harmonious balance and self-efficacy through their exposure to African artistic forms.
We are an ensemble cast of musicians, percussionists, dancers, singers, storytellers, and performers presenting authentic West African art forms with our main focus being on Mande cultures. Our repertoire includes Sorsonet - a Baga initiation dance, Yankadi/Macru - a combination of Sousou seduction dances, Soli - a Malinke initiation dance, Kassa- a Malinke harvest dance, Zaiko - a contemporary social dance from Ivory Coast/Zaire and last but not least Danse de la Chaise - an exhilarating contemporary dance requiring balance and strength.
The Ballet is under the direction of Trina Soumare, an experienced, teacher, educator, and dancer. The company’s artistic director Moussah Soumah is an accomplished percussionist, costume designer, and former musical director for Senegal's own Ballet Bougarabou.
